This application note describes the rapid simultaneous determination of inorganic anions and cations in drinking and natural waters by ion chromatography using electrochemical suppression.

A secured supply with clean drinking water as well as the protection of natural waters from discharge of pollutants arising from industrial and other human sources is one of the most challenging tasks for mankind today and in the centuries to come. The lack of clean drinking water due to exponentially increasing consumption and contamination of natural water resources together with climate change related water shortage have attracted considerable attention within the last decades not only in immediately affected countries, but all over the world.
Ion chromatography (IC) has been established one of the most commonly used analytical techniques for the determination of ionic contaminants in drinking and natural waters and is the standard method, that has been validated and published by many national and international standard organizations.
